The Optical Society of Southern California was founded in 1951 to increase and disseminate the knowledge of optics and closely allied sciences and to promote the mutual interests of investigators, organizations, teachers and students in these fields. The Society is a local section of the The Optical Society (OSA) and typically meets on the second Wednesday of each month from October through June.  Most of our meetings are open to the public.  Those interested in promoting our goals are encouraged to apply for either Individual or Corporate Membership.

The Optics Community Mourns the Passing of Emil Wolf, 1922-2018
Emil Wolf
Emil Wolf, 1978 OSA President and Honorary Member, passed away on 2 June 2018.  Wolf was known for his research in physical optics, including diffraction, coherence properties of optical fields, spectroscopy of partially coherent radiation, and the theory of direct scattering and inverse scattering.  During his distinguished career, Wolf had significant influence on advancements in optics and on graduate students, who would become future leaders within the community.
Wolf was originally from Czechoslovakia and spent time in Italy, France, and the United Kingdom during WWII.  He attended Bristol University where he received his undergraduate degree in mathematics and physics, and a PhD in mathematics in 1948.  Wolf worked at the University of Edinburgh from 1951-1954, during which he collaborated with Max Born on the textbook, Principles of Optics.  Following his time at University of Edinburgh, Wolf took a position at the University of Manchester, and subsequently moved to the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA in 1959.  Wolf held the position of Wilson Professor of Optical Physics at the University of Rochester.

Vital Link STEM Event Photo
The STEM & the Arts Career Showcase is an annual three-day event held at the OC Fair and Event Center that gives students the opportunity to explore career pathways in STEM fields.  The program brings together industry professionals, educators, and college representatives that provide students the opportunity to explore their future.  The program includes student competitions and displays, industry demonstrations, career exploration exhibits, industry speakers, a job recruitment area, live entertainment, and more!  The program reaches over 6,000 targeted students, parents and their families.

OpticStudio Roadmap – Optimize optical systems for MTF

Abstract:  Zemax has developed a new optimization method called Contrast Optimization, which uses the Moore-Elliott theory to target the best MTF response up to a desired spatial frequency.  This ground-breaking MTF optimization method has been added to OpticStudio.  Optimization of the MTF is especially useful for extended images with cutoff frequencies set by the detectors, since lower spatial frequencies can be improved at the expense of higher, unneeded frequencies.  But optimizing directly on the MTF value is slow, difficult, and often fails.  Contrast Optimization increases the MTF in a much more robust way, and is just as fast as optimizing on the RMS wavefront.
In this talk, you will learn about this and many other recently added features and updates in OpticStudio to take your optical design to the next level. The topics include:
• Aberration analysis - Improve your freeform designs by analyzing how various aberrations degrade the image or beam quality of your system across the full field of view with the Full-field Aberration analysis.
• Field points - Efficiently simulate and design highly complex freeform systems and non-rotationally symmetric systems with more than 200 field points, which can be visualized with the Field Plot and easily managed with the new Field Data Editor.
• Automatic conversion - Design high-confidence virtual prototypes by tracing sequential and non-sequential rays through the same optical system by converting sequential systems with decentered apertures, multiple configurations, and sequential tolerances to non-sequential mode.

Applications of Short Coherence Sources in Fizeau Interferometry

Abstract:  Most Fizeau interferometers use laser sources with many meters of coherence to ensure high contrast fringes are produced regardless of the position of the test article.  The independence of the fringe contrast from test part position is admittedly very convenient.  However, using a short coherence source with internal path matching opens up applications that are not possible with the longer coherence source.  These applications include isolating the surfaces when measuring plane parallel optics, facilitating test and reference beam separation for vibration immune interferometry, and streamlining radius of curvature measurements by moving the position detection internal to the interferometer.  This presentation will cover the theory behind each of the applications and present practical results from commercial implementations.  Of particular interest will be the surface isolation as applied to a large 24-inch aperture interferometer and radius of curvature measurements in a production environment.

Challenges and Opportunities in Asphere and Freeform Metrology

Abstract:  Aspheric and freeform surfaces can be a useful addition to the optical designer’s toolbox.  The additional degrees of freedom allow for a reduction in the number of surfaces, making systems lighter, cheaper, and more compact.  New technologies such as MRF, slow tool servo diamond turning, and optimized molding and replication techniques have expanded the range of their practical applications.  However, aspheric and freeform surfaces can still be difficult and expensive to measure.  In this presentation, we survey the various methods for measuring these surfaces and examine some of the sources of error, limitations, and other gothchas for each of the techniques.  With that prospective we then look at recent advances and potential paths forward for improving the accuracy, speed, and flexibility of aspheric and freeform metrology.
