Uniting the Southern California Optics Community

The Optical Society of Southern California was founded in 1951 to increase and disseminate the knowledge of optics and closely allied sciences and to promote the mutual interests of investigators, organizations, teachers and students in these fields.

The Society is a local section of the Optical Society of America and typically meets on the second Wednesday of each month from October through June.  Most of our meetings are open to the public.  Those interested in promoting our goals are urged to apply for either Individual or Corporate Memberships.

Innovations in Architectural Lighting
Mike Gehring and John Martin

Abstract:  How do architects, interior designers, and lighting designers use light in the built environment?  John Martin and Mike Gehring of global lighting design firm KGM Architectural Lighting will discuss how they use lighting technology to create atmosphere, mood, feeling, and image for various building types around the world.  They will show how they think about light, and design lighting for indoor and outdoor spaces.  Examples of descriptive renderings and drawings will be used to describe lighting ideas, as well as how they document working drawings for construction.

Nexus between government, academia, industry and our professional societies in optics and photonics:
A Panel Discussion

    Alan Willner  Bruce Tromberg
  James Fisher   Nicolaus Lambert

Background:  In October 2014, the OSSC had a very successful event hosted by Corporate Member Precision Optical.  We had four (4) distinguished panelist discuss the National Photonics Initiative (NPI) from four different vantage points.  After that NPI effort, several government sponsored programs were formed, funded and exceptional results have been realized.

During this meeting, we had one returning panelist and three (3) new voices to provide some updates on NPI and then focus on ways we in Southern California could band together to leverage our efforts in several areas for the benefit of our OSSC Corporate and Individual members and many others in our Southern California Optics and Photonics Communities.

OSSC Past President and Fellow Donn Silberman
moderated the Panel Discussion.

Challenges in Optical Design for Soldier Systems
Pete Vallianos
Co-Founder, N2 Imaging Systems
Abstract:  N2 Imaging Systems is a designer and manufacturer of new generation soldier night vision and targeting systems, with emphasis on small, low power, and cost effective, thermal imaging and multisensor designs (i.e. Night vision goggles, sights, etc.).  This presentation is an overview, highlighting some of the of the key challenges in Soldier Systems Optics design, with example solutions (e.g. new broad band chalcogenides, hybrid polymer glass designs, places for optical computing, free form prisms, eyepieces, display technology directions, etc.).  This presentation is from the viewpoint of designers, where the challenges are related to real mission requirements, real size/weight constraints, and performance, environmental and reliability requirements implicit in these designs.
