About this event

An overview of electro-stereoscopic displays

Lenny Lipton

Modern electronic stereoscopic display technology was first demonstrated in the early 1980s with the development of a means to display flicker-free images using a single display screen or projector. The proper presentation of left and right perspective views with the elimination of viewer fatigue was enunciated and various techniques for displaying and selecting appropriate perspective views to be seen only by the the appropriate eye were perfected. Most of these techniques depend upon the user wearing eyewear but the future holds promise for stereoscopic displays that do not require individual selection devices.

About our speaker:  Lenny Lipton is recognized as the father of modern stereoscopic imaging. He founded StereoGraphics Corporation in 1980 and was the CTO of Real 3D. He’s been granted fifty-four patents in the field of 3D displays with many pending. He received a Smithsonian award for his invention of CrystalEyes, the first shuttering eyewear product for stereoscopic displays. He invented the ZScreen, the dominant 3D motion picture projection product, and also invented the primary multiplexing techniques used for TV, culminating in current 3D cinema technologies for TV.   A highly creative and multi-disciplined individual, in addition to his work in physics and optics he has written books (including Independent Filmmaking, the bible of the genre), done remarkable paintings, and written many poems.  At Cornell University he wrote the lyrics to Puff the Magic Dragon at age 19.  Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary put the words to his famous melody and the song became a hit in 1963.  It has been sung by generations of children since. He is a Fellow of the SMPTE and SPIE, a member of the Board of Directors Executive Committee of the International 3D Society and a recipient of their Lifetime Achievement Award. He produced and directed 25 independent films. He lives in Laurel Canyon with his wife and three children.  Please join us and hear about his relationship to Optics over the years.
