-Harvey Spencer-

As Chief Scientist-Optical Design at DRS, Harvey has designed numerous types of optics; from reflective systems, FLIRs, visual designs including camera lenses, eyepieces, helmet-mounted image intensifier sensors, and anything else optical.  Harvey Spencer graduated from the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester in 1974.  Professor Doug Sinclair was his informal mentor.  Harvey worked summers in Dr. Sinclair’s consulting business doing “real optical designs” & writing optics routines to run on an HP35 calculator.  After graduation, he worked for Jim Heber in the Optical Engineering Dept. at Hughes Aircraft in the old Culver City plant.  Harvey went to the Autonetics Div. of Rockwell working for Bob Eisle, doing lens design on ACCOS and Grey’s Program.  After 2 years he went back to Hughes, this time working for Marcel Gawartin using the HEXAGON program written by Pat Hennessey.  In the late 70’s Harvey volunteered to work part time for Bob Fischer at Hughes Missile Systems in Canoga Park to learn the “user-friendly” CodeV program, doing tolerance analysis on the IR Maverick missile optics.  During his 22 years at Hughes, Harvey worked with Hank Frels, Bob Ginsberg, Gary Noyes, Rick Juergens, Reddy Chirra, Lacy Cook, Jerry Rosenblatt, Valerie Olsen, Sandy Sandback, and many others familiar to OSSC members.  Harvey holds two patents and has published several papers.  An avid pilot, Harvey built his own airplane and regularly flies out of Torrance airport.  He holds an Instrument Rating and an Aircraft & Powerplant Repairman certificate.
