The SXS (Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes) Project

13 March 2016: The 11 February 2016 announcement of the first detection of gravitational waves by members of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) amazed the world.  The 13 April OSSC meeting featured a detailed presentation by Professor Josh Smith, of LIGO and CSUF, on LIGO's discovery and the optical technologies employed.

What’s next for the search?  To find out, Optics & Photonics News talked with LIGO Chief Scientist and OSA Fellow Stanley Whitcomb. Click here to view a transcript of that interview.
