We are looking for an exceptional Principal Optical Systems Engineer for planning, conceptualizing, designing, testing, and documenting new development of opto-mechanical and electro-optical products from concept to production release as well as supporting and improving already released products. In this role you would be involved in all engineering aspects of product development in a high-paced, customer-facing team setting. You would lead and contribute to design reviews, project reports, design documentation, publishing resulting guidance and tracking progress against the project schedule. You will also support the Manufacturing Engineering team to implement a successful product manufacturing release and processes.
You are responsible for:
- Being exceptionally familiar with high-precision and stable opto-mechanical and electro-optical systems design.
- Possessing strong Engineering analytical skills: statics, dynamics, thermal loads, tolerance analysis and material selection.
- Driving product development activities including creating new or modified designs for new or existing products and document changes of Optical, opto-mechanical, electro-optical, electric and control systems and instruments.
- Determining and developing test specifications, methods, and procedures.
- Performing tests and troubleshoots assemblies and/or final systems in cross-functional collaboration with the engineering team.
- Participating in feasibility studies and develop cost estimates for systems, testing, development labor, etc.
- May be assigned as or work in collaboration with a Project Manager for selected projects in which responsibilities could include:
- Collaborating to develop project plans
- Developing, maintaining, and tracking progress of tasks, deliverables and cost.
- Organizing, planning, and leading periodic project meetings.
- Recording, documenting, and publishing significant decisions and action items in meeting minutes.
- Performing a variety of duties in organizing and supporting of technical documentation.
To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience:
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or Optical Sciences – advanced degree or equivalent advanced training is preferred
- Direct experience in architecture and design of complex opto-mechanical systems incorporating precision mechanisms, motorized actuation, thermo-elastic deformation control, and dynamic vibration isolation.
- Work experience in a commercial environment with companies developing and manufacturing systems and/or instruments in a volume-manufacturing environment.
- Able to perform tolerance analysis to verify fit and function of designs.
- Must have a balance of strong analytical skills and hands-on product development with a proven track record of bringing multiple products to market throughout their career.
- Strong communication skills, technical writing skills, project management and analytical skills.

Compensation and Benefits:
Salary Pay Range: $93,100 - $172,900 per year. This range is a good faith estimate of the expected salary range for this position, based on a wide range of factors including qualifications, experience and training, operational and business needs and other considerations permitted by law. At MKS, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for the role.
Bonus:
This position is eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, in an amount to be determined by MKS [or as applicable].
