Keynote Address:  Scale to Thrive?

Consolidation in the Photonics Industry

Laura S. Marshall, Managing Editor and Karen A. Newman, Group Publisher

Photonics Spectra, BioPhotonics, EuroPhotonics, and photonics.com

Abstract: The economy grew tremendously in 2010, according to leaders of companies in all areas of photonics – lasers, optics, imaging and more – who report high expectations that this growth will continue, especially in industrial sectors. Several major companies faced consolidations in the past year, merging with or acquiring other companies, and some key players feel that this consolidation will help the industry maneuver even faster, delivering innovation and sparking even further growth in the years to come. We’ll take a look at the health of the photonics community overall, and the drivers behind recent consolidations in the industry.

About our speakers: Prior to joining Photonics Media, Laura Marshall was the senior editor of special projects and the editorial designer at The Berkshire Eagle as well as production manager for the paper’s Berkshires Week magazine. Before that, she was an editor/webmaster at Thomson West Publishing in Rochester, N.Y. Laura went to grad school to study linguistics, but the lure of journalism proved too powerful to resist.

Karen Newman has enjoyed a career in business-to-business publishing, covering the ups, downs and consolidations in a range of industries including acoustical construction, endodontics, cosmetic chemistry and the beauty industry, packaging and photonics. Karen always knew she wanted to study journalism and work in publishing, and apart from two semesters of accounting (because it sounded practical), she has done just that.
