Bio-Engineering Advanced Medical Solutions (BEAMS) Laboratory at UCI – An Overview & Update

by

Prof. Elliot Botvinick, UC Irvine, Biomedical Engineering and Surgery Depts.

The Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic

About Our Speaker:

Dr. Elliot Botvinick established The BEAMS Lab in 2007. It is part of the University of California Irvine's Departments of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering. The BEAMS group has laboratories at the Beckman Laser Institute and Clinic, the Convergence Optical Science Initiative (COSI) in Applied Innovation, and in the Edwards Lifesciences Center for Advanced Cardiovascular Technology.  We focus on mechanobiology and medical device development — both using biophotonic theory and technology for sensing the physical environment within engineered systems, diabetes management, and interstitial analyte sensing for the detection and treatment of disease.

We are curious about intrinsic and external mechanical forces in cellular micro-environments and their effects on the behavior and molecular signaling of cells. This is a growing area of research in which we differentiate ourselves through the application of optical tweezers, engineered platforms, and by always seeking out interesting collaborative relationships.

Prof. Botnick’s presentation will be an overview of the work conducted at the BEAMS Lab, its current research programs and some futures areas they hope to explore.
