Abstract: Lightweight, stylish, wide field of view Augmented Reality (AR) headsets for the consumer electronics marketplace promise to revolutionize the way we work, play, and connect by enabling such super-human capabilities as telepresence, information-rich navigation, automatic language translation, and contextual artificial intelligence. Many well-known tech companies (including Meta Platforms, Inc. and Microsoft) are developing this technology, and within a decade these devices may be as common as cell phones. A component fundamental to their operation is the waveguide combiner, which sits directly in front of the user's eye and combines the view of the real world with the digital. This talk will describe the basic optics of waveguides, their different types, the process and software tools used in their design, and the challenges inherent in their design and fabrication.

About our Speaker:  Dr. Eric Fest in an Optical Scientist at Meta Platforms, Inc. in Redmond, WA, an Adjunct Associate Professor of Optics at the University of Arizona, and a former member of the OSSC. He is the author of the SPIE best-selling book Stray Light Analysis and Control, and created and taught (with Prof. Jim Schwiegerling) at the University of Arizona the world's first graduate level course focused solely on the design of Augmented Reality waveguides.  His previous employers include Raytheon and Synopsys, Inc. He has a PhD in Optics from The University of Arizona.
