-T. Scott Rowe-

T. Scott Rowe, P.E., founded Rowe Technical Design, an optical engineering consultancy in 2005. Previously, he was Director of Engineering for WaveTec Vision Systems, a developmental company working on new applications for wavefront aberrometry in Aliso Viejo, CA.  He was also Director of Optical Engineering for Fovioptics, Inc of Santa Clara CA. Previously, he was Associate Director of Research and Development at Alcon Laboratories, Inc for 17 years. He has been involved in laser system development since 1978 in a variety of settings, including military/aerospace, commercial and since 1987 in ophthalmic medical devices. He holds 21 issued US patents, and has published and lectured in a wide variety of technical and clinical venues, including as instructor for the Optical Instrument Design course as part of UCI Engineering Extension . He earned a BSME from the University of California at Irvine, where he fostered his early interest in optics, and continued with graduate work at UCLA. He resides in Dana Point, California with his wife, and enjoys short story writing and a variety of water sports, notably fly-fishing.

    Some Career Highlights:

* Developed the first diode laser for ophthalmic surgery, 1988.
* Early researcher in frequency doubling of solid state lasers; set the reported world record for output power and conversion efficiency for a Nd:YAB self frequency doubling crystal laser, 1990.
* Managed all lasers for Alcon (except the excimer laser) from 1995 – 2004.
* Currently researching and innovating a diverse array of potentially disruptive technologies, including novel wavefront aberrometry applications, non-invasive diagnostic instrumentation for the measurement of macular pigment, as well as developing laser beam projector systems for security markets.
* Developed the first commercial optical tissue phantoms, for testing ophthalmic diagnostic instruments.
* Early involvement in Southern California professional optics education, co-founding the Lasers and Electro-optics program at Irvine Valley College in 1989-90. Taught during the 1st semester, board member for 16 years.

Scott notes: “I’ve really enjoyed my involvement with OSSC over the past 12 years or so, renewing old acquaintances and building new friendships. I first became aware of the Society as a guest speaker back in the ‘90’s, and realized that I already knew a number of people involved. I started getting actively involved in 2004-5, and served in virtually all of the BOD positions along the way, culminating as President during the 2011-12 meeting year.  But as a number of past presidents and I discovered, service to the Society does not have to end with your presidency, I have been fortunate to help the Society co-host the joint NASA-SPIE meeting, "Mirror Tech Days" in 2013, and to lead a number of trips to the Mt. Wilson observatory for great evenings of star gazing.  More recently I have returned to the editorship position for the Societies' newsletter, "Images". I was honored to have been made a Fellow of the Society in 2014."
