Thomas Erwin Godfrey was OSSC President in 1973-4, having started as Arrangements Chairman in 1969 at the request of then-President Don Nicholson, and serving as Treasurer, Secretary and Vice President. He graduated with a BS in Engineering Physics from the University of Illinois in 1960, came to work for Northrop Corporation in Hawthorne, California. He took Walter Wallin's Optics Classes, and courses in servomechanisms, mathematics, at UCLA. Tom worked many years at Northrop as an engineer and manager in optics and electro-optics. In 1994 Northrop Grumman was formed. Tom took an early retirement offer that December, but was back by May 1995 as an optical design, contractor which he continued to do until 2008. During 1995-6, OSSC President David Kramer asked Mr. Godfrey to find out which OSSC Fellows were alive, or their death date. That request was later expanded to include writing "Fellows Profiles". The next President, Susan Raffensperger (now: Rico) asked Tom to become the first OSSC Historian. Profiles have been written, published in the OSSC "Images" newsletter and posted on the OSSC Fellows and Past Officers pages on this website about several OSSC people so honored. Read these Profiles to learn more about some of the key players past and present in the OSSC. Several Profiles have not been written for lack of information. If you can tell us anything about these Fellows, Past Officers, or their next-of-kin, email, write,or call Tom Godfrey.
Tom Godfrey was named the OSSC's 18th Fellow at the June, 1999 meeting of the Board of Directors. He was presented with a commemorative plaque at the October 6, 1999 OSSC meeting.
