Biography

Nemanja Jovanovic received a B. Tech. Optoelectronics with honors (2005) and Ph.D. (2010) from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. From 2010 to 2012, he worked as a postdoc on astrophotonics, jointly appointed between Macquarie University and the Australian Astronomical Observatory. He worked at Subaru Telescope between 2012 and 2017 as part of the SCExAO instrument project, where he demonstrated efficient injection into single mode fibers on-sky for the first time. He currently works at Caltech as a Senior Instrument Scientist, developing advanced photonic instruments for the largest ground-based telescopes, including instruments for exoplanet research.

 

Abstract:

Photonic technologies enable extreme miniaturization while offering advanced functionalities. They provide an avenue to developing sophisticated next generation astronomical instruments with new science capabilities, critical to future space missions. Some examples of the development of integrated photonic component include: spectrographs, Bragg gratings, photonic lanterns and pupil remappers.

 

In this talk I will outline the challenges of coupling starlight into photonic devices and the solutions implemented. I'll describe some of the photonic technologies that have been explored and applied to astronomical instruments to date. I'll explain what it takes to detect extra-terrestrial life, and the photonic technologies currently being developed to enable that on future space missions
