Abstract:
Laser ultrasonics has found a variety of applications for in-situ monitoring and post-process testing. In these applications, one laser produces ultrasonic waves, while a second laser detects those waves interferometrically. The fact that no surface contact is needed provides key advantages over conventional transducer-based ultrasonics. Laser ultrasonics can provide immediate feedback on defects during welding, seamless tube extrusion, and additive manufacturing, enabling repair of the defects during manufacture. Laser ultrasonics can also measure fluid flow and fastener load without making contact and find hidden defects in semiconductor devices and composite materials. The physics and practice of laser ultrasonics, and many applications examples, will be reviewed.
